He has won several awards at the national & international level and proved that disability couldn’t resist an individual from achieving sporting excellence. Amit Kumar Saroha is India’s most popular Paralympian, Arjuna Awardee, and Asian Para Games medalist. He has also represented India at Paralympic Games in 2012. The former hockey player, Amit Kumar is going to make a record in Paralympics 2016, Rio de Janeiro. He became a quadriplegic in the age of 22 due to the compression of the spinal cord.
In 2007, Amit Kumar met a car accident that makes him dependent on the wheelchair. He was a national level hockey player before the accident. Most doctors used to tell him that his possibilities of walking again were close to impossible. Initially broken, Amit got a real inspiration from Jonathan Sigworth – American wheelchair rugby player who came to India in order to promote para-sports. With Wheelchair Rugby, Amit found a new world of parasports, so he joined Sigworth and start promoting wheelchair rugby in India.
Amit got a chance to meet several para-athletes while playing in a demonstration match of wheelchair rugby. During these games, he learned the official Paralympic nomenclature for his pain. He chose to take formal training in sports that demands upper body strength. Amit started playing in throw ball and discus throw and never looked back.
In 2010, Amit Kumar won a silver medal in Discus throw while playing in Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China. In 2014, Amit won two medals in Asian Para Games held in Incheon, Korea. His medal-winning performance secured him a direct qualification for Rio 2016. Apart from being a player, Amit Kumar is also promoting Paralympic movement in India.
