Smart Cities Mission is an innovative program that was announced by the India Government with a motive to develop 100 cities in the best way possible. With this retrofitting program, PM Narendra Modi has a vision of developing 100 smart cities in India by modernizing them with the best technologies. The 100 smart cities mission will be completed in three phases. The 100 smart cities will be nominated by all the states and union regions based on different criteria. In the first round, 20 top scores will be chosen. Furthermore, 40 cities will be elected for during the next rounds of evaluation.
India’s First 20 Smart Cities
Recently, the government announced India’s first 20 smart cities. The states that are supposed to offer “quality” proposals involves Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. And, the cities include Thane, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Vizag, Jaipur, Surat, Udaipur, Bhopal, and NDMC area of Delhi. The Indian Government has also released a rough plan for the smart cities project.

What is a Smart City?
A smart city is an approach that is taken to integrate advanced technological solutions in a particular manner in order to manage the city’s assets. Those assets can be related to the information systems, local departments, transportation systems, hospitals, schools, libraries, power plants, law enforcement, and other services. The main purpose of creating a smart city is to improve the quality of life using advanced technologies.
According to resources, only the capable cities will be chosen for the Smart Cities Mission through three phases. The selection criteria is mentioned in the Operation Guidelines that was released by Mr. Narendra Modi.
